Central Elementary recently hosted children's author Alan St. Jean for the exciting Writing Olympics. Mr. St. Jean collaborated with individual classes to help students create their own unique stories. He guided them as an "editor," allowing the students to take on the role of the author themselves. Students then became "illustrators," creating original artwork to accompany their stories.

Academic Update March 2025

Central Elementary recently hosted children's author Alan St. Jean for the exciting Writing Olympics. Mr. St. Jean collaborated with individual classes to help students create their own unique stories. He guided them as an "editor," allowing the students to take on the role of the author themselves. Students then became "illustrators," creating original artwork to accompany their stories. These stories were shared during a grade-wide assembly, where judges Mrs. Herncane, Mrs. Zeglin, and Mrs. Hutzell scored each creation. The judges were amazed by the students' creativity in both writing and artwork, and the students were incredibly proud of their accomplishments. A special thank you to Mr. St. Jean for visiting our school and to the Chestnut Ridge Education Foundation for providing the grant that made this event possible.

Academic Update - February 2025

Central Elementary recently celebrated the 100th day of school with a fun-filled day of learning and creativity. Students practiced their math skills by counting 100 objects and counting by tens up to 100. They also used this milestone to explore their writing abilities by imagining what their lives might be like in 100 years, from their careers to the advancements they hope to see.

In addition, students answered a series of thoughtful questions about the number 100. They shared what they would do with $100 and what they think life might be like a century from now. The day was not only a great way to reinforce important math and writing skills but also an opportunity for students to reflect on the future and spark their imaginations. Chestnut Ridge Elementary Academic Spotlight - November 2024

This month, Miss Weyant’s second-grade class learned about veterans and their contributions to our country. Students not only studied veterans in class, they also had the opportunity to learn first-hand through an interview with a member of the armed forces. Students also reflected and wrote about the qualities that make veterans heroes. This was a great project to help students gain literacy skills while learning about our country's heroes.
